Handicrafts with children
Mother’s finest, 01/29/2020

What could be better than doing something with your children, spending time with one another and creating something together? We like to do this with a small handicraft project! There we can be creative, forget everything around us and also have time to talk and exchange ideas.

Handicrafts don’t have to be complicated and do not necessarily require a lot of different material. We love to work with paper, cut it out and then decorate it by gluing on colourful craft jewels or pom poms. I always have a supply of coloured paper at home, ready to make lots of beautiful things with it.

A handicrafts idea is not just a fun activity in the afternoon but I also think it can be a fun activity for a child’s party. This allows the children to relax for a little while in peace and quiet, sitting together at a table and at the end, they also get to take home their little piece of art as a souvenir.

Birthday invitations

If you are planning a birthday party, it is always nice to design the invitations yourself. This means you already get into the mood for the party together and the joy of handing out invitation cards is even greater if you have made them yourself.

Material:

  • Coloured paper/cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Glitter pens
  • Glitter stones and pom poms for gluing

When my daughter celebrated a mermaid party, we made shell invitation cards for her kindergarten friends. I drew the outline of a shell on coloured paper and cut out the shell. We then traced the shape with glitter pens and decorated it with lines. With then finished the shell off was with lots of colourful glitter stones and pom poms. I wrote and printed the invitation text on the computer, cut it out and glued it to the back of the shell. Ready!

Rainbows

The colourful rainbows can be used as a children’s room decoration or as invitation cards, whatever you prefer. Several small ones strung together on a string make a decorative garland!

Material:

  • Coloured paper/cardboard
  • Watercolours or oil crayons/felt pens
  • Coloured craft jewels and pom poms or tissue paper
  • Scissors

There are no limits to your imagination! You can draw on the curved shape you cut out of paper or cardboard with watercolours, felt-tip pens or oil crayons and then decorate everything with craft jewels, tissue paper and/or pom poms.

The two rainbows made by my daughter have been hanging in her children’s room for a long time now and are always a joy to look at!

Fairy crowns

At my daughter’s last birthday party, a fairy party, I printed out templates for the children to make colourful butterfly crowns. On Pinterest or generally on the internet you can find many print templates to use for handicrafts. Older children, who are already good with scissors, can even print out the stripes and the different sized butterflies.

Material:

  • Print template
  • Coloured paper
  • Scissors
  • Adhesive
  • Stapler
  • Pom poms
  • Stickers / craft jewels / foam rubber stickers
  • Pens to decorate

The butterflies are glued onto a strip – the length of which must be adapted to fit the child’s head because this will be the part that is then put on – one by one or several at the same time, as you like. You can then decorate everything nicely with pens and craft jewels.

I hope you have a lot of fun doing handicrafts and getting creative together!
